SCCM 2012 Minimum Requirements

The New SCCM 2012 will be based on a 64-bit platform. While you can host a Standard Distribution Point (DP) on a 32-bit host you will not get all of the current technology available to support that service. SQL Server requirements are for SQL 2008 SP1 CU10 or later. SQL is required at the new Central Administration site (optional site based on network design), all Primary sites and also at Secondary sites (new to SCCM 2012). Database replication is used to transfer data between sites rather than some of the traditional file transfers used in SCCM 2007. SQL Reporting Services is necessary to support all reporting, there is no support for the old Reporting Point found in earlier versions of SCCM and SMS.

Here is the information taken from the Microsoft download site:

Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2008

Minimum System Requirements:

  • Site servers and site roles require 64-bit OS (distribution points are an
    exception)

    • Branch distribution points have been deprecated and replaced with standard
distribution points that can be hosted on Configuration Manager 2012 client
operating system platforms, with the exception of Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3 and Windows XP Tablet PC SP3
    • Standard DPs can run on Windows Server 32-bit but will not support advanced
      functionality
  • Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)
    • Distribution points can run on Windows Server 2003
  • SQL Server 2008 SP1 with CU10 (64-bit)
  • SQL Reporting Services is ONLY reporting solution
